Magnets play an important role throughout the transportation industry, from electric-vehicle motors to magnetic braking and high-speed rail systems.

Maglev Transportation

Magnetic-levitation systems use controlled magnetic forces to reduce or eliminate mechanical contact between a vehicle and its guideway. By reducing rolling friction, Maglev technology can support high-speed transportation with low mechanical wear.

Magnetic Braking

Magnetic and eddy-current braking systems can generate braking force without relying entirely on friction between conventional brake surfaces. These systems are used in specialized rail and industrial applications where controlled, repeatable deceleration is important.

Electric Vehicles and Permanent-Magnet Motors

Permanent magnets are especially important in many electric-vehicle traction motors. High-performance NdFeB magnets can provide strong magnetic fields in compact rotor designs, helping engineers achieve high torque and power density. Automotive programs may also require high-temperature grades, tight dimensional control, coating consistency and PPAP documentation.

Engineering Considerations

The right magnet for a transportation application depends on operating temperature, required torque or force, corrosion exposure, magnetization direction, mechanical retention and long-term supply requirements. In high-volume programs, qualification and traceability can be just as important as magnetic strength.
