Why Radial Magnets →Magnetics is one of the last engineering fields that still runs on two unit systems at once. Datasheets quote Gauss and MGOe (CGS), simulation tools want Tesla and kJ/m³ (SI), and pull-force specs bounce between pounds, kilograms and newtons. Flux density is what a gaussmeter reads and what "surface field" or "Br (residual induction)" refers to on a datasheet. SI unit: tesla. CGS unit: gauss.
Field strength describes the magnetizing or demagnetizing field, and is the unit behind coercivity values (Hcb, Hcj). SI unit: amperes per meter. CGS unit: oersted.
The maximum energy product is the figure of merit that names the grade: "N42" means (BH)max ≈ 42 MGOe. SI unit: kilojoules per cubic meter. CGS unit: mega-gauss-oersted.

Three places unit confusion causes real purchasing mistakes:
| surface field vs. Br | Br (≈13,200 G for N42) is a material property measured in a closed circuit. The field you measure at the pole face of an open magnet is far lower — often 2,000–6,000 G depending on geometry. A supplier quoting "13,200 gauss magnets" is quoting Br, not what your sensor will see. |
| Hcb vs. Hcj | Both are in Oe or kA/m, but Hcj (intrinsic coercivity) is the number that governs demagnetization resistance at temperature. Confirm which one a datasheet lists before comparing grades. |
| kgf pull ratings | Import datasheets frequently rate pull force in kg. A "10 kg" pot magnet is ≈ 22 lbf — and that rating assumes ideal thick-steel contact. See our pull force calculator for realistic derating. |
