Neodymium magnets (NdFeB) are the strongest commercially available permanent magnets and are widely used where engineers need high magnetic performance in a compact space.
Key Benefits of Neodymium Magnets
- High magnetic strength: NdFeB provides very high energy density compared with ferrite and Alnico, allowing smaller magnets to produce substantial force.
- Compact designs: High magnetic performance can reduce component size and weight in motors, sensors, actuators and electronic assemblies.
- Flexible geometry: Neodymium magnets can be manufactured as disks, rings, blocks, arcs and custom shapes with different magnetization directions.
- Multiple temperature grades: Standard and high-coercivity grades are available for different operating-temperature requirements. The appropriate grade must be selected for the actual thermal environment.
- Broad application range: NdFeB magnets are used in motors, generators, sensors, medical devices, audio equipment, robotics and industrial assemblies.
Important Design Limitations
Neodymium magnets are brittle and can chip or crack under mechanical impact. They are also susceptible to corrosion and are commonly protected with coatings such as Ni-Cu-Ni or epoxy. Higher magnet grade does not automatically mean a better design; temperature capability, coercivity, geometry and the magnetic circuit all matter.
