7 Things to Check in a Neodymium Magnet Supplier

Choosing a neodymium magnet supplier is about much more than comparing price quotes.

For procurement teams, the real cost of a magnet often becomes apparent only after the order arrives. Magnets that are slightly out of tolerance, improperly magnetized, made from the wrong grade, poorly coated, or inconsistent from shipment to shipment can cause production delays, product failures, rework, and expensive supplier changes.

That is why evaluating a neodymium magnet supplier should start with one question:

Can this supplier consistently deliver exactly what we specify?

Here are seven things procurement professionals should check before selecting a neodymium magnet supplier.

1. Can They Meet the Exact Magnet Specifications?

This should be the first consideration.

Two neodymium magnets that look identical can perform very differently depending on their material grade, dimensions, magnetization direction, coating, temperature rating, and manufacturing tolerances.

A complete magnet specification may include:

  • Magnet grade, such as N35, N42, N52, N35SH, or N42H
  • Outside dimensions
  • Inside diameter for ring magnets
  • Dimensional tolerances
  • Magnetization direction
  • Surface coating or plating
  • Operating temperature requirements
  • Surface gauss requirements
  • Pull-force requirements
  • Magnetic orientation
  • Pole configuration

Procurement teams should be cautious of suppliers that simply quote a magnet based on dimensions without asking questions about the application or complete specification.

For example, an N35 magnet and an N35SH magnet may have similar room-temperature magnetic characteristics, but they are designed for very different temperature environments.

Likewise, a disk magnet that is axially magnetized is not interchangeable with the same disk magnet that is diametrically magnetized.

What to ask your supplier: Can you provide a complete specification sheet confirming the grade, dimensions, tolerances, coating, magnetization direction, and magnetic requirements before production?

2. Do They Have Reliable Quality Control?

Neodymium magnets require tight manufacturing controls.

Small dimensional variations can create assembly problems. Inconsistent magnetic performance can affect the operation of sensors, motors, magnetic couplings, holding systems, medical equipment, and other products.

A reliable supplier should have procedures for checking characteristics such as:

  • Diameter, length, width, and thickness

3. Can They Verify the Magnet Grade?

One of the biggest risks when sourcing neodymium magnets is assuming that the grade printed on a quotation is necessarily the grade that was manufactured.

A magnet described as N52 should meet the appropriate magnetic characteristics for N52 material. The same applies to high-temperature materials such as N35SH, N42SH, N42H, and other specialized grades.

For critical applications, suppliers should be able to provide appropriate material or magnetic-property documentation.

Depending on the project, this may include:

  • Material certifications
  • Magnetic property data
  • BH curves
  • Br values
  • Hcb values
  • Hcj values
  • Maximum energy product
  • Maximum operating temperature information

Procurement teams should be particularly careful when a quote for a premium magnet grade is dramatically less expensive than competing quotes.

The magnet may look the same.

That does not necessarily mean it is the same.

4. How Consistent Are They From Lot to Lot?

A supplier producing one acceptable sample is not the same as a supplier capable of producing thousands or hundreds of thousands of consistent magnets.

Production consistency is especially important for OEM customers.

A change in raw material, tooling, coating thickness, magnetization process, or production facility can affect the finished product.

Ask potential suppliers how they maintain consistency between manufacturing lots and whether they have controls for production changes.

For recurring orders, procurement teams should also establish whether the supplier will notify them before making significant changes to:

  • Manufacturing location
  • Raw materials
  • Magnet grade

A dependable magnet supplier should understand that consistency is part of the specification.

5. Can They Supply the Required Compliance Documentation?

You should be able to send a drawing, specification, sample, or application requirement to your supplier and receive meaningful technical feedback.

A supplier should not simply sell magnets.

They should help ensure that you are purchasing the right magnet for the application.

But purchasing magnets strictly on unit price can create significant hidden costs.
