Magnets are surrounded by myths and oversimplifications. Here are several common misconceptions and the engineering reality behind them.

Myth 1: Magnets Automatically Destroy Electronics

Reality: The effect depends on field strength, distance and the type of device. Strong magnets can interfere with some sensors, magnetic storage media and devices that rely on magnetic components, but ordinary exposure does not affect every electronic product in the same way.

Myth 2: Magnets Can Cure Illnesses

Reality: Permanent magnets should not be treated as a general cure for disease. Medical uses of magnetism involve carefully controlled technologies and clinical applications, which are very different from consumer claims about static magnets.

Myth 3: Magnets Stick to Every Metal

Reality: Strong attraction occurs mainly with ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt and certain steels. Aluminum, copper, brass and many stainless steels are not strongly attracted to permanent magnets.

Myth 4: Stronger Is Always Better

Reality: The correct magnet is the one that meets the application requirement. An N52 magnet is not automatically a better engineering choice than N35, ferrite or SmCo if the lower-cost or more temperature-stable material already meets the required force and environment.

Myth 5: Magnets Never Lose Strength

Reality: Permanent magnets can provide stable performance for many years when used within their design limits, but excessive temperature, opposing magnetic fields, corrosion or physical damage can cause performance loss.
